how to deal with flea eggs in luggage

Hi,

My wife and I are from Canada and are vacationing in Orange County. We have a challenge we are hoping you can help us solve.

We recently stayed for 2 weeks at a friend’s home – where we found out the hard way – the home had a dog flea problem. It seems fleas will usually munch on pets – but if no pets are around – tourists will do just fine. In this case the pets had been out of the home since January 1 and so had the homeowners so when we arrived on January 16 they said ‘BooYah’ and began munching on our feet, then ankles then legs. At least that is what we think happened.

flea spray safe for puppy under 12 weeks old

I have a 7 week old Shih-tzu puppy and everything we can find for treatment says “not to use on puppies under 12 weeks”. What can I use on her that won’t hurt her?

washing pet in dawn dish soap

Can you tell if bathing my dog in Dawn Dish soap can help with the fleas.  My Vet told me to bath her in the dawn dish soap.  I did that on Monday morning and checked last nite and this morning and have not see a flea on her belly.  She also isn’t itching and biting now.  She is allergic to the fleas.  I have been to the Vets since June till now.  She has been having the treatments every month, but it seems that the bath has helped.  Is it my e imagination or is that true is does work?

how fast can fleas reproduce?

I went to a friends house to feed her cats on Monday. On Wed I brought her home from the hospital and her cats are infested with fleas.  I have 2 cats of my own but they have Frontline monthly.  My friend thinks I gave her cats the fleas.  Can they reproduce in 2 days if one jumped on the cat? (Its winter here in Ohio)

flea on dog

I found a flea on our dog yesterday. She has never had any on her before. She is treated with Advantix for 7 months of the year. A visitor came in the house a few hours previous to finding the flea and he has a cat and had just been around someones dog. Is it possible the flea came in on him? We will continue to check the dog today but I am hoping this is an isolated incident. Your thoughts please.

can you get fleas without owning pets?

Hello, I found flea eggs (i think) and 2 live fleas in my bed.  (i do not own a pet). I managed to freak out and clean every inch of my place, call an exterminator, etc.  However, when I was cleaning, I only saw about 3 more very small fleas.  I found an adult dead one upstairs on a couch.  I dont see them and cannot tell the difference between dead fleas, eggs, and just specks of dirt? (I see a lot of specks of dirt looking things) How can I tell the difference? Will I know when it is a flea/larvae/pupae/egg? No one else in my family believes me because they dont see them but are they just hiding??

can rats infest yard with fleas?

I’ve treated the yard for fleas, but my dog keeps getting reinfested.  Could rats in my garage or backyard reinfest the yard with fleas?

Amongst the favorite host’s for fleas will be dogs, cats, squirrels, rats and mice. In fact, pretty much any animal in the yard could have fleas during the summer or warm months. But as our online article explains, fleas don’t want to leave their host animal as this is where they get both food and shelter. In fact most fleas will live their entire life on whatever animal they first find. Additionally, this life is quite short and in most cases will be less than a week. All the while they’ll be laying eggs on the pet which will live out their life cycle right there under all the fur and pet hair.

does rain kill fleas

When it rains hard, does it kill the fleas that are outside?

If you read our FLEA CONTROL ARTICLE, you’ll learn some key yet often times unknown facts about fleas. One of the big ones is that in general, fleas don’t “hang” out in the open like the grass in a yard. What’s most likely out there would be eggs, larvae and pupae. And this would only be true of larvae and pupae if the conditions are right for them to survive past the “egg” stage. As our article explains, these guys need a lot of water, humidity and food to live past the larval stage. Now if they do survive this stage, they’ll then pupate and when ready to hatch, they’ll only do so when a meal is close by so they can jump on it and feed. The key here is that they’ll only hatch out to an adult when food is close by and not because they’re ready to hatch.
